Practical
Support - The WNRAS Angel Network
What is the Refugees as Survivors “Angel Network”? The Angel Network is a group of people who have indicated that they are willing to be called on as a last resort to support refugees who are clients of Wellington Refugees as Survivors Trust (WNRAS) or for WNRAS itself. This support could be practical (e.g. furniture), services (e.g. driving lessons) cash (e.g. to pay for extraordinary dental work). The idea for the Angels Network came from a group of Rotarians (Wellington City) who formed a Friends of RAS group("FORAS"). Why do we need an Angel Network? WNRAS clients are those refugees legitimately entering New Zealand who are most traumatised, physically and mentally by their experiences prior to coming to New Zealand. WNRAS works with these people to enable them to become settled and useful members of society. Government funding to WNRAS is for specific work with Refugees, not organisational capability and is limited. Also Refugee Services Aotearoa NZ provides extensive support for refugees during their first 6 months (sometimes extended to a year). This involves setting up a house, introduction to schools, doctors, banks, shops etc. A team of volunteers are trained for this important role. WNRAS clients are with us much longer than one year and our staff through counselling become aware of some quite specific needs. This is where the Angels come in. How will the Angels Network operate? Members of the Angels Network will be called upon to help source, supply or fund specific items when an actual need arises. This might be for a specific refugee or family need, or for WNRAS itself, in a case of last resort or urgency, where other funds or services are not available. Angels are only contacted by email. Email requests will stipulate if it is for goods, services or cash, There will also be a brief background on the client and the circumstances that have led up to this request. If an Angel can assist they email the WNRAS General Manager and arrangements are made to connect the support (goods, services, cash) to the client and protect each party's privacy. How to join the Angel Network? If you wish to join the Angel Network, please contact:
Your name and contact details will be placed on a secure and confidential database at the WNRAS office. How will you know that the donation has been received? Donations (including time) made to WNRAS, will be acknowledged and if receipted, will be tax deductible. Please note: WNRAS is a registered charity under the name "Wellington Refugees as Survivors Trust". The Charities Commission registration number is: 20880. |
